PRESS RELEASE

ALT launches a new concert series at the National Sawdust this fall, featuring the work of alumni artists who have gone on to lead successful careers. Alumni composers Christopher Cerrone, Jeremy Howard Beck, Jeff Myers, and Patrick Soluri, and librettists Royce Vavrek, Stephanie Fleischmann, and David Johnston will have their work presented at one or both of the ALT Alumni Events. The concert-style programs will feature excerpts from recently premiered and upcoming works for the stage. Many of the featured artists have created new operas for companies around the country, including Houston Grand Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Opera Saratoga, Washington National Opera, The Industry (LA), and Beth Morrison Projects.

Librettist Royce Vavrek (of Dog Days fame, and whom the New York Times calls “an exemplary creator of operatic prose”) will have a total of three works presented–an adaptation of Lars von Trier’s devastating 1996 melodrama Breaking the Waves, with music by Missy Mazzoli27, a portrait of Gertude Stein and Alice B. Toklas’ Parisian flat in the 1920s, with music by Ricky Ian Gordon; and O Columbia, an opera-oratorio that examines the past, present, and future of the American spirit of exploration, with music by Gregory Spears.

Stephanie Fleischmann, who has been in residence with ALT since 2011, has penned libretti for two of the works to be presented. Adapted from the graphic novel by Rutu Modan, The Property tells the story of a woman and her daughter who travel to modern-day Warsaw to try and regain family property lost during World War II, and features music by Wlad Marhulets. With composer Jeremy Howard Beck, she has adapted Brian Castner’s critically-acclaimed memoir The Long Walk for the operatic stage; this profound story of an Iraqi War veteran reintegrating himself into to family life will close the first program in November.

Other highlights include composer/librettist Christopher Cerrone’s Invisible Cities (a 2014 Pulitzer finalist), a fantastical tale of Marco Polo and Kublai Khan; The Privacy Show, a techno-noir opera confronting the issue of privacy in our increasingly digitized society; and two ALT commissions which respond to the question, “What might Edgar Allan Poe write if he were alive today?”
