In 2013, ALT launched InsightALT – a new festival of readings and symposia that offers an intimate, inside look into American Lyric Theater’s process of creating new operas at all stages of their development. American Lyric Theater has since expanded InsightALT into a full-season series, featuring professional singers, with piano or orchestra accompaniment, depending on the stage of development. Each event is preceded by an extensive 10-day workshop.

Inspired by the life of the groundbreaking computer scientist, Alan Turing, this opera is an historic-fantasia on his life. After saving England in World War II by cracking the Nazi U-boat code, he was found guilty of gross indecency for a homosexual relationship and was chemically castrated. Two years later, Turing was found poisoned near a cyanide-laced apple with a bite taken from it. The apple is believed to be a reference to his obsession with Disney’s Snow White, and an image rumored to be the inspiration for Apple Computer’s logo. Turing’s mysterious death was labeled a suicide – but there are many other theories. The concert will star baritone Jonathan Michie in the role of Alan Turing, with soprano Susannah Biller, bass-baritone Joseph Beutel, mezzo-soprano Elise Quagliata, bass-baritone Justin Hopkins and tenor Daniel T. Curran, with a choral ensemble from MasterVoices, formerly The Collegiate Chorale.
